What is it?
Corn Ethanol is 'ethanol produced from corn as a biomass through industrial fermentation.' It was an alternative to gasoline and petroleum. It was primarily used by United States and is most common ethanol in US. These days demand of corn ethanol is increasing through out the world, estimating by year 2020, the demand could grow beyond 125 billion liters of corn ethanol.
Production
Two methods
Dry corn milling= In dry milling operations, liquefied corn starch is produced by heating corn meal with water and enzymes. Then enzymes converts the liquefied starch to sugars
Wet corn milling= In wet corn milling operations, fibre, oil, and protein is separated from the starch before it is fermented into ethanol.
Advantages
Corn is one of the most plentiful crops in the United States and also it is renewable. Compare to gasoline greenhouse-gas emission can be cut by as much as 20 percent. Right now, only corn kernels are only used however, recent discoveries made possible to turn corn leaves and stalks into products that can be used to produce ethanol. Which eventually result increase of both quantity demand and supply with high efficiency and cheap price.
Disadvantages
Biggest concern when it comes to corn ethanol is shortage of corn available for food. Also, increase of smog in urban areas caused by production of ethanol and destroy habitat is big concerns as well. Efficiency of corn ethanol is controversial issue since it contains one third less energy than gas which also means mileage is 30 to 40 percent lower.
America's corn prduction and consumption
This graph clearly show that the second largest consumption of corn in US is for Corn fuel.
This definitely proves quantity of demand and supply of corn fuel is increasing as time goes by.
Corn Price And Corn Fuel
Price of corn reached its highest level in decade and according to UN Food and Agricultural Organization expected grins price to increase 13 percent. Which some people argue it is caused due to immense amount of corns used for fuel production. People demand for a fuel solution since it will soon cause food shortage. Energy independece and Security Act of 2007
Also referred as the CLEAN ENERGY ACT OF 2007.
Its purpose is “to move the United States toward greater energy independence and security, to increase the production of clean renewable fuels, to protect consumers, to increase the efficiency of products, buildings, and vehicles, to promote research on and deploy greenhouse gas capture and storage options, and to improve the energy performance of the Federal Government, and for other purposes.”.
This act cut subsidies to the petroleum industry and promote the useage of alternative energy.
International usage of bio-energy (including corn fuel)
